Well, after spending the last few weeks of trying to get to the bottom of my vibration/clanking noise, I found the problem. It is in fact the primary chain. I wish I would have pulled the cover first before going thru everything but the chain. Thought it was leaning out and misfiring due to accel enrichment not working, checked ignition , timing , clutch, CV joints, pulled diff cover to check ring/pinion, and spider gears, pulled side covers to inspect. drained and changed trans fluid, checked for exhaust contact with the body, checked motor mounts, etc etc.
Pulled the rad and grille out, unbolted the front mount, jacked up the front of the motor and pulled the primary cover. There it is! Chain is stretched to the point that the tensioner cant compensate for the slop, so the chain is wrapping up on the sprocket and binding up and releasing, its also slapping around in the case and ate away some of the trough that collects oil and returns it thru the shaft. Gonna swap a chain and sprockets from another trans, along with the trough and tensioner. Hopefully I can put this to bed and get my car back on the road.
