Intermittent Check Engine?

Hi,

I've been having an intermittent Check Engine light come on in my '89 SPG. It will come on occasionally and stay on for a few minutes to several days but then eventually turns off by it self. No abnormality noticed when it is on and the car continues to run very smooth.

I made the code reader and read the codes this morning but no codes were stored except for the RPM code (12231) as the engine was off. At present, the Check Engine light is off and has been for the last couple of weeks.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong that is triggering the CEL?

BTW, I just changed to oil last week but I wouldn't think that should effect anything. Would the codes have been erased automatically as it has been running correctly for the last several weeks? (Not complaining, but hopefully the continuum stays on my side for a while)
