I have had the same battle for the same reason (putting in buffalo grey seats in place of tan). As best I can understand the process through my own experience, each end of that white place cir clip or ring, has an indent that fits to the end of the steel circle near or on the seat rod, if you pry the one end out of its locked in position you can take a drift pin and tap the white plastic ring the rest of the way out buy tapping it on the opposite end, and the white ring will "circle out" of or off of the steel ring and then unlock itself so the steat rod will come out of it's groove. Thats the best I can explain in type, but what a major PITA, but besides locking the seat in place the plastic stops the rattle and squeak of metal on metal. GOOD LUCK
