Auto Tranny Rebuild Posted by BAAB [Email] (#1214) [Profile/Gallery] (more from BAAB) on Fri, 17 Jul 2009 10:13:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey!
I would like opinions on whether or not a home mechanic can rebuild a 1979 Saab 900 automatic. I am not interested in opinions on the auto vs manual as I have 6 classic and vintage Saabs and all of them are manual trannys. I prefer the manual, but I would like to keep this one an auto.
I have rebuilt a Saab b engine in the past, but is the job of rebuilding an auto tranny a much hard job? I have a good knowledge as how the auto tranny works, but have never torn into one before except to replace a primary chain. I don't have any special tranny tools.
For those that have successfully rebuilt these auto trannys, do you think it is something I can handle. I do have the master rebuild kit parts (clutch and steel discs, seals, o-rings, gaskets, and I can get brake bands if needed). I also have a repair manual specific to the Saab auto tranny. Should I give it a try or pay someone else to do the job? How difficult is it? THANKS!
