you can try various tests on the sender wiring before removing it by first taking the wire running to the gauge and grounding it with power on - this should cause your gauge to peg all the way to the top - if it doesn't it probably means your gauge and not your sender is faulty. You can do likewise with the idiot light wire - again it should go on when grounded.
The third wire (black or brown can't remember) is a ground.
This is a good way to confirm if your idiot light is functional.
Good luck reaching in and pulling the idiot light from the speaker hole - I tried and tried and tried and at the end of the day found it was simpler to remove the bolster and come in from below and my hands are by no means meaty monsters.
