I'm not familiar enough with the year car your working on, but I was able to find a thicker electrical tape at Harbour Freight that would do the job. You can also just use a double layer of electrical tape. The purpose of the tape isn't so much to keep the body from getting scratched by the clips, it's to keep water out from between the inner and outer door sheet metal where it's spot welded at the top.
Urethane windshield setting compound is a good all around filler and adhesive. It bonds really well to everything and stays flexible. It's perfect for holding on things like rain gutter end caps. It comes in caulking tubes at NAPA. You can also use autobody seam sealer, but it tends to set up real quick and I find it hard to work with sometimes. 3M autobody mounting tape is probably the "foam" stuff you're looking for. It's actually a rubber tape with adhesive on both sides. You can buy it in different widths at auto-body supply shops.
The window sweeps (if that's what you're asking about) are specific to these cars. Try Skandix to see if they carry the ones for your year.
