If you got an 88 SPG seat, there's a good chance you got a seat for the passive belt system. This seat has the backrest release on the side of the backrest, rather than the little ball way down below the backrest, and it will have the lever on the side to adjust the tilt.
Those seats mount completely differently than your 88 CV seats do, as you found out.
What you need for your 1988 CV is a seat from a non-passive belt 84-90 900. The car must never have had passive belts. A 1990 airbag seat will be OK. 1991 and later, all 900 seats mount like the passive belt seats (and the 9000 seats, incidentally).
You will need to swap the knobs for the recline between the two seats, though. The CV uses the smaller knob due to the reinforced lower door sill.
