after qualifying for the state's assisted repair program where they subsidize part of the repair costs after you've spent a threshold amount on your car with still failing results. In my case, my air mass meter has been running lean for so long that it helped burn out my oxygen sensor (2 years old). The repair shop had a difficult time finding a functional new (rebuilt) air mass meter. They went through 4 or 5 before finding one that worked.

In the previous weeks I had done a general tune up, vacuum leak check, oil change and replaced by catalytic converter and had failed three tests for having NOX readings ranging 1400-4000.

This time I passed but just barely, my low-speed NOX number was two digits within passing. I might be 1) buying a new(er) car sometime before the next emissions test and 2) converting this car (an 87 900 turbo) to the 2.4 injection system. I have 10 months to figure something out.

In my case the culprit was the AMM.
