block the upper A arm as documented all over the site, read the various methods used, and the various items used to do it (other than the real deal tool).
If you are replaceing the outer boot, before you raise the car you should use a 32mm socket 1/2 drive wiht 18" or longer extension with a helper on *that*, I like to use the handle from a full size floor jack - makes the lever about four feet long, to brake the nut loose, raise the side and doing the block under the Upper A arm as above... then remove the nut completely from the drive shaft, then remove the two 17mm nuts from the upper ball joint only, put a floor jack under the bottom of the knuckle and move up *slightly* to allow the bolts to pull out without binding, undo the clamp on the inner boot and break the seal (think tupperware, I know goofy) with your finger tips pulling towards you as it often is more than air tight, have several items handy that you can support the rotor/caliper/knuckle assymbly, yank said unit by the rotor and the ball joint should slide out and the unit will fall down and towards the rear of the car, as it does so there is enough room to push the CV joint out of the bearing in the knuckle, if it fights you (sticks in the bearing) one of those hammers with rubber on one end and hard plastic on the onter will do the trick hitting the threaded end several times with the rubber or plastic end and NOTHING ELSE! to get it loose, support the unit down and to the rear and you will be able to pull the entire drive shaft out and go do the deed. assembly is reversed
An altertive is to do most everything above but not remove the nut, then when you pull the unit out and down you will have to be very careful with the tripod bearing, dropping it to one side and then you can remove the circlip from the bearing, slide the bearing off, remove the inner boot, slide the remains of the outer boot off that end, and put the new boot back from the inner end. It takes a bit more care and feeding. Sometimes I remove the entire halfshaft as further above, but *then* remove the inner boot and replace the outer one via that method. Of course you must be confident that the CV joint inself is in very good condition and not full of sand, dirt, or other junk.
