Pivot Mounting Hole in the Alternator Posted by tibbidoh [Email] (#1014) [Profile/Gallery] (more from tibbidoh) on Mon, 14 Sep 2009 06:39:01 In Reply to: Re: Both sets?, rfwj, Sat, 12 Sep 2009 09:35:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
rfwj,
The housing for the alternator is aluminum and a steel bolt runs through it so the rubber bushings insulate the bolt from engine vibrations, but the bolt still rides on the alternator housing. In higher mileage cars the bolt has typically worn down the housing and there is slack there allowing the vibration or shaking. I recently had mine re bored and a steel sleeve put in to minimize this and it works fine now. You don't have to bore the whole length, just about 1/2" on the end closest to the fire wall. Also, if you will take a grinder and champher the end opposite of how you pivot the unit in is will make re-installation much easier.
