If the original paint was clear coated, then yes, I would clear coat. Get some fade spray as well to feather in the new clear with the old. You'll probably still have some wet sanding to do on the transition areas anyway. Wet sanding (even with 2000 grit paper) will leave the finish dull. You need to finish up with a good quality glazing or polishing compound and wax to really make it shine. If you've never machine-buffed a car, DON'T. It's possible to burn right through the new finish before you know it. Small areas can be hand buffed a lot safer.
The clear coat I'd recommend is SprayMax (find it online or at autobody supply places). It is a 2K clear which is much more resistant to chemicals and abuse than lacquer is. It comes in a special aerosol can.
