Good question....when I was having gas smell in the trunk area, I searched the posts and there were many that mentioned the most likely and easy solution was to replace the cap. In my case, the gravel monkeys that previously worked on the car replaced the fuel pump and left gravel/sand in the o ring interface area, and the ring would not seal.
At the time, fuel price were skyrocketing, so I put a locking cap on...but it was the O ring seal that was the problem.
Hate to say it, but replacing the cap wasn't scientific and more of a monkey see monkey do....
