of the transmission. You need to put the car on ramps or jackstands, have a spare gasket handy, and remove the rear cover. Note that my 1989 has no filter back there, but my '90 and '91 transmissions have a filter with a fine mesh screen. Be careful when cleaning it. I used part of a can of brake cleaner to flush out the filter.
Don't put motor oil in the transmission. Today's motor oils are not the same as the motor oils specified when our C900s were built. Today's oils have less ZDDP additive in them because it fouls up catalysts when it burns. The new oil standards require low levels of ZDDP, which is what protected the gears in that old oil. Use any dedicated gearbox oil like GM Synchromesh, Honda MTL, Redline MTL, Amsoil MTL or a motorcycle oil that is designed for the shared engine and gearbox arrangement on most motorcycles. There are other lubricants out there that work as well.
