Manual trans fluid change (long) Posted by Peter Martin [Email] (#3037) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Peter Martin) on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 04:21:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Finished the fluid change & want to share some observations. My Mityvac worked very well to remove the gearbox fluid through the dipstick orfice. Only drawback is the small (4.5oz) capacity of the cup. A larger (16oz) is available which would make things easier. This method of extraction is needed for the '91 & newer models which do not have a drain plug. Recently I purchased a set of ratcheting reversible combination wrenches & once again they proved useful. When space is tight it is slick to have the speed of a rachet & socket without the bulk.
Many posts refer to the removal of the transmission cover to access the magnet & screen on the '91 & newer transmissions. Two covers on the pass. side are not it. It is on the back of the transmission close to the steering rack. I would call it a differential cover 'cause that is where the ring & pinion is located plus it is behind where the half shafts protrude. There will be a pint or so fluid in this area so be ready when you pull the cover. My screen & magnet contained only metal paste & no chunks. I hope this helps!
