Your car has to be running to check the fluid! There's two marks on the level rod. One is for cold and the other for hot. If your thinking about changing the ATF fluid, this would be a good time to remove the ATF return line and have someone start the car and check for fluid flow. This will tell if the fluid pump is working. Another easier way would be to check the pressure tap with a gauge. Since there wasn't any warning when the trans. stopped working, I still think it's either linkage or a bad seal. This last reply is something that made me think my transmission went. Start the car, hold the brake, have someone look at both axles. If either one is turning and no forward motion is happening, the you C/V joint balls are gone and all you need is a rebuilt axle. The same thing is, the transmission stopped working without any warning. Just a bad C/V joint. I hope that's all you need also.
