Bob,
You will always feel significant free motion on a raised front wheel. It's the play in the outer CV, inner CV (driver and tripod) and the slack in the differential bevel gears all combined so don't read too much into that. It's pretty common for mechanics to swap inner drivers complete with the housing (the round aluminum part with the six bolt holes) but they keep the shims with the main case they are associated with. This seems to work just fine probably because the dimensional differences between any two inner driver housings are negligibly small. The ideal procedure is to keep both the shims AND the inner driver housing with the case and replace (or swap) only the inner driver itself but that should entail replacement of the oil seal and usually guys don't want to go to that much trouble. Because you have the correct shims on the left side you have less to worry about. It would require a pretty significant change in just the right shim pack alone to throw the backlash or pre-load way off. A few thousandths one way or the other shouldn't be a big problem on a well worn set up. Do I understand correctly that the alternate (possibly correct) right shim pack is not available to measure? Because that would clean this whole thing right up.
