I have had that problem, although I can't say I did any lasting damage with my blunder. I do have several keys painted with the brush on touch up paint the color of the car the key is for. Then there are specific key rings with unmistakable doo dad's on them. For the money the paint color code is the best idea. It dries fast and takes years to wear off, and you can always see the color enough to know upon close inspection. I would take the right key and use a little graphic lock ease on it and the tumbler and open and close several times. Also check for tightness of the lock tumbler mechanism and trunk handle for if that is loose it effects opening . I have had to crawl in through back seat to tighten the two bolts of the handle. If all else fails you can replace the tumbler, but that will give you another key. By the time I got rid of my 89 due to dents and rust I had replaced the ignition tumbler so that gave me a door key and ignition key, then some crazy girlfriend (not sure which one [now I am]) trashed my car so I had to get another trunk; and yes I did not swap the lock so then I had 3 keys for the 89. Two were color coded. I guess you get the picture, er, painting.
