Yes, easiest and cheapest way to deal wit the broken key is to swap out the entire shifter assembly and replace with one from an auction site. The only tricky part is the 3 triangular bolts that secure the assembly to the floor. You'll need a special tool for that - these are also sold on the same famous auction site. Or you can make one (like I did) by sacrificing an 11 mm deep well socket and cut three long grooves (using a grinder) parallel to its length, using the hexagonal pattern of the socket to get the 120 degree angles right. Do this by marking the cut locations in the lip of the socket with a sharpie. On the other hand the tool is pretty cheap, when ou can find it.
A middle of the road (in terms of cost) would be to order a new cylinder and key, and remove the assembly and take it to a locksmith to install. One great advantage of this approach is that you can give the Saab dealer your VIN and they can order you a key that matches the door locks. if you don't have a dealer nearby, you can order the key through Saabsite.com. It takes a couple of weeks to get the key/cylinder made up to order like this. I tried to change out the cylinder on my car and it is not a simple job.
