Many years ago I had the same problem on a 1983 900T, would start fine when cold, and run fine for hours and hours. But it would not re-start when hot. Since it would start and run when cold, that meant plugs, ignition, fuel injectors, fule pump, etc, were all fine.
It turned out to be wire (yes its always a wire) that went to an air polution control device, to help control vapor when starting a hot motor???? Sorry that I forget where the wire was (I remember it was a small wire, maybe 18 gauge). Also, I don't know if this applies to years beyond 1983 (which had the 8-valve motor).
good luck
