At the bottom of the key tumbler unit there is a rainbow shaped segment of teeth; these engage simular teeth on the actual ignition switch. Sometimes the part on the bottom of the key tumbler will break or fall off. I have replaced this rainbow shaped peice. If this is the issue you need to remove the tumbler to see if that is the issue. This part may only have come loose, but if broken you can purchase the part used as a larger unit say the shifting mechanism on an auto matic or standard and just replace the rainbow shaped part. This will allow you to keep original key. I'd say it's about 2 hours work. Then again the tumler may have rounded off where it attaches to this gear segment, but I think perhaps the attaching screw has just fallen or loosened.
