Saab Junkie's write is full of excellent stuff. I too have to stress the point of buying on condition rather than mileage or even a pile of receipts from repairs. Although both mileage and receipts could be indicative of a good car many times they are not.

Although i've heard all kinds of horror stories about transmissions I guess i've been lucky- never had a major failure despite owning 8 900s. My feeling is that if the transmission works correctly at the time of purchase - doesn't grind, pop out of gear or whine loudly in 4th and 5th gear- then it will probably continue to work properly during your ownership as long as you change the oil and treat it gently.
