I am in agreement with Turbocon86. I tried to replace the whole cardboard thing with thin flywood, but two years later, it is just a wee bit too thick so that I have broken two of the flippin' door pulls (cracked at the screw that holds it in.
Also, if you keep the cardboard original backing, do the foamy thing with the new material, but limit the foam on the edges (that fold around to the back) so that you can easily flatten those edges of fabric with glue or staples (Which were used OE) on the backside.
