nick,
Some 1989-90 transmissions have a manufacturing defect which causes the fifth gear fork shaft to bind in the case, particularly once warmed up. If you have one of these and you succeed in forcing it into fifth you probably won't be able to pull it out of fifth until it cools down. There is a fix but first (having eliminated the possibility of shift control linkage problems) you should remove the two side covers and examine the fifth assembly, fork and shaft to see whether there is an obvious defect there. I've seen fifth synchro assemblies in various states of self-destruction. If you pull the pin from the fifth fork (which connects it to the shaft) you should be able to slide the fork back and make fifth engage completely. If that works OK then remove the reverse idler link (the pivoting arm held by the 6 mm bolt with the 10 mm hex head, don't drop anything) let the reverse fork flop out and rotate the fifth shaft outwards. You should be able to slide the fifth shaft forward and backward pretty easily while the fifth fork sits still (because you pulled that pin). If the shaft binds or won't move at all you've found the problem and the fix is to make the shaft slide. That can sometimes be accomplished by just sanding the shaft down lightly or it may involve transmission disassembly. Good luck
