LED's fit the existing twist sockets on the older cars and they make replacement twist socket / bulb combination if you have the type of bulb that is tacked to the socket.
I am not really sure about the foil that you are talking about, if it is the circuit mylar then it want fix that for sure.
Note that the smaller bulbs (or any bulbs) that are "polarized" only work when installed one way (since that what a diode does is allow current flow in only one direction).
What you will notice if you install them is that your light that you don't replace w/ LED's will get a bit brighter if you replace enough of the existing bulbs (the LED's draw virtually no current), you will not be able to dim the LED's (they are either on or off), and what happened to me was that I didn't replace my instrument cluster lights because they became brighter and the left hand side bulb warped the plastic holder so the light would intermittently function or sometimes took a pop to the dash board for lighting motivation.
