That's funny! I used to get so much free beer for bailing the franchise guys out when I was rebuilding those at the SAAB indy. If you do them all the time you learn all the little secrets. If you don't know the secrets you are screwed. Parts availability always was a problem because SAAB had an agreement with BW that they would only sell the T37 parts to SAAB for resale. We had to keep an enormous stock of cores and used parts to do a proper rebuild without breaking the bank. It was more cost effective to get certain parts re-machined than to buy a new one from SAAB and I kept a few machinists busy with that. Back then a new pump from SAAB was about $700 so a unit with a blown final drive and a good pump and front clutch was a celebrated organ donor. And yes, if the installer fails to synchronize the dual shift detents the teeth will strip from the planetary pinions very quickly in third gear.
