Simon, vsfoxe, and Landjet, thank you for responding. Yeah, that serial number was not helpful in identifying the year of the gearbox.

I went back to the junkyard and found the VIN, which was located above the engine oil drain plug. The VIN decoder on this site helped me to identify the year. According to the VIN number, it's a 1989 gearbox.

Of course for me, the magical letter was "K".
