I pulled out the passenger seat, vaccuumed all around, removed center console, poured the boiling water trick on the ignition like others have suggested (with a towel underneath to capture spillage), blew out water with compressed air, then poured on some Boeshield T9 - key turns likes new. The Boeshield was $9 at REI in the bike section.
My key was so hard to turn that it would not disengage once started causing the starter to keep trying. I was afraid I wouyld bend or worse, break the key right off.
