Is this only when the engine is cold? Is it only when the weather is cold? When's the last time you cleaned around the airflow venturi? Have you tested the various thermoswitches in the CI system? How is the plug gap? When is the last time you ran through some fuel injector cleaner? What kind of gasoline do you use?
Your oxygen sensor does not control anything until the engine's warmup program cuts out and the sensor has reached operating temperature and generates a signal. A single cylinder cutting out is probably an issue with the fuel system (leaking fuel line, gummed up injector, fuel distibutor fault) or ignition system (hall sensor fault, bad wiring or grounds, poor plug gap, solid state relay fault).
You wouldn't believe what passes for gasoline these days. Since the EPA set the gasoline detergency requirement at about 50% of what it was in the early nineties, gasoline detergency has actually dropped to the point that everyone's combustion chambers and fuel injectors foul and build up deposits like crazy now. You may want to pull the injectors and take a look at them. I used to have a few old vs. new pictures of my injectors when I replaced them at 190k on spec. They are still avalable as spares, and I'm going to retire the car soon. Send me an e-mail if you want to see the pictures.
I hate rust.
