We've had four C900's in the family, the first of which was a 1984 900 4-door non-turbo, which my father handed down to me and has since gone to the great Saab parking lot in the sky. Here is what I'll say:

The four-door has a stiffer chassis and handles better then a (non-SPG) hatch. My sister has an '86 S hatch, and it is weak-kneed in handling compared to the '84.

My current 900 (which is currently not running---see above) is a 1990 Turbo convertible. Automatic. I actually feel that my current one heats up faster then the '84, but I drove the older one in colder climates and it did not have the heat-producing turbo.

As for fuel economy, the 8v non-turbo was quite good, I averaged mid-twenties HAMMERING it. The 900S is great, my dad's '89 Turbo Con 5-speed is great, the automatic is a P-I-G. I get about 19 MPG combined and I am greatful for that. And I am much calmer driver now.

As for ride, meh, I dunno. I suppose I need to drive an early 90's that is not a convertible to speak eloquently on that.

I will say I never liked the 3-spoke steering wheel on the older up-level models, I much prefer the four-spoked wheels from the old base model or the cars with airbags. And in 1990 they got a bigger gas tank! 18 gallons is nothing to sneeze at in such a small car, and its a good job my gas hog turbo automatic is so equipped.

All personal opinions that are sort of based in fact, of course.

And I can say with every degree of confidence that nobody builds a car that does so much, so well, for so long as a Classic 900. In my opinion truly a high watermark for a mass produced car.
