Paul,
There is a pin on the bottom end of the shift lever, inside the housing, which rises when you lift on the ring (below the shift knob) to shift into reverse. You aren't supposed to be able to shift into reverse without lifting that ring but the spring loaded mechanism can become gummed up and prevent the pin from dropping back down when the ring is released. Once that happens the shift lever can be thrown all the way over to the right when it should normally stop at the fifth gear gate. Cleaning, lubing and adjusting the mechanism in the shift lever is the solution.
