1988 900S Misfire, hard start when warm, no idle

Hi everyone-
I've been doing some searches and haven't seen this exact problem/ diagnosis, so I'm looking for help!
I have an '88 900S 16V with 160k. Here's the chain of events. On a recent trip it returned poor MPG, then started stumbling on acceleration, then faintly misfired at cruising speed.
Prior clues were IMMEDIATE firing(engine would catch before it had turned over 1/2 a revolution) when car was cold with some rough running and black smoke, then hard starting (long cranks) when engine was warm.
Once home, I put in new plugs, wires, cap + rotor, and fuel filter w/ fresh gas. I cleaned every ground I could find.
On my first test drive all seemed well, but the symptoms came back and eventually the car wouldn't run, dying at intersections. My battery then failed to crank and I assumed it was bad. I piggy backed a spare with jumper cables to get it home. Seemed to run fine. Now I suspected a bad battery (it was 6 years old) I charged my old one, confirmed voltage. Cleaned every alternator contact and tested voltage while running, all seems fine. I have a new battery, but haven't installed it as the car still wouldn't run right with a piggy-backed good battery. Car seems to run OK on cold start, but once it comes off the start cycle and warms up (10 mins or so) it progressively gets worse and then will not idle and dies.
My next suspects would be fuel pressure regulator (FPR) because of the cold/ hot start issues (starts too fast when cold, too long when hot) or a failing fuel pump.
Could anyone offer any insight? I can't throw money at parts hoping to make it work, but I don't have any fuel pressure testing equipment, etc either.
Thanks! Brian
