... are overrated. I have a 1993 and a 1989. imho 1989 is a better year.
Airbag is great for the first 10 years + an unknown after that. Have to be a little more careful working on the car if it has one. The ABS in these cars is very nice, but, it is more expensive to maintain than the non-ABS, and the non-ABS are still great brakes. I actually prefer them I think!
You want a turbo and you want a stick. 2.0L NA is durable but not quick. 2.1L NA is a little faster but can have issues. 2.0 turbo is fast + reliable. automatics guzzle gas + break moderately easily. other thing you don't want is rust, but verts often see more garage time + maybe a little better on average in that respect?
On our local forsale list, there's currently a '93 or '94 red garage queen for $11k and a seemingly well maintained '88 black one for $3k (turbo + stick I believe)... so yeah, asking price is all over... but shouldn't have trouble finding something in your price range. good luck!
James...
