When the trans is in neutral, the clutch is disengaged, so the release bearing has no load on it.
the issue with flat towing is that without the engine turning, the input shaft isn't turning, and it may not be lubricating itself properly. I think the 5speed is probably fine. Still I wouldn't do it. A dolly is much nicer.
