Without knowing the mileage there are only two approaches you can take (besides blowing it off); 1) Install the unit and cross your fingers, 2) partially disassemble and inspect the unit to get a feel for it's condition. If it all looks good then put it back together with new gaskets, seals and filter and install it. That second option assumes that you have enough knowledge of automatic transmissions to do the work and make the call. No matter what you do you will be investing a lot of DIY labor or paying a lot of money to a SAAB mechanic. I guess to answer your question, $300 would be a good price for a really good, reliable T37 with, let's say, less than 75,000 miles (about half the typical life expectancy of a T37). The R and R is huge so putting a lame T37 in your car is not economically wise. The problem is that unless you can know WITH CERTAINTY more about it's life and current condition or (dyno)test the unit then the only way to tell whether it's OK is to look deep inside it, and you may find trash in there.
