Hi guys,
A few weeks back I was posting regarding start-up troubles. It sounded like it was the fuel pump, so I ordered one from eeuro. Let me give a quick shout out to them--I ordered it around 4:30pm on Thursday, and it was at my door before 10am the next day! Free shipping.... amazing!
Anyway, this past weekend we swapped the fuel pump insert and man was it easy. The hardest part was loosening the pump retaining ring without the special tool. I used the handles of an open pair of channel locks, which my buddy held in place so they wouldn't slip off the tabs, and I put a large wrench between the handles (open end of wrench "gripping" one of the handles), and applied torque. This was all after PB blasting the heck out of it and trying the hammer-chisel technique which was effective at popping off the little tabs but not budging the ring.
Anyway, once the ring was off, everything else was a piece of cake. I'd bought the wrong insert (I got the single barb, 8mm tube; the one in the car was triple barb-6mm tube) but I just hose-clamped the 8mm tube over the 6mm tube that was there and it seemed to fit perfectly. Everything else was just a matter of not breaking any little tabs in haste and such.
Put everything together and she fired right up! I kept the old insert--is that something that can be rebuilt and passed along to someone who needs one?
Also, while I was at it we changed my fuel filter which I think may have never been changed. It was disgusting. Turns out my car has been running lean since I got it and it was pulling timing to compensate, and still ended up knocking somewhat. With the new fuel filter on, it's running better than ever! Hurray!
Thank you very much to everyone's helpful tips and suggestions. As always, without your help I never could've done it. Anyone thinking about replacing a fuel pump, definitely get the insert and do it yourself! There's nothing to it...
