Top up or down, you should never let kids drive a car. Seriously it's safer than most early nineties cars--the top and windshield frame are very strong. If I had to roll over in a convertible that would be the one. Obviously compared to cars with side airbags it's not so good. At this point condition is everything. If it's totally rust free, has been serviced religiously, is on it's second (or better third)Saab factory new automatic, and has a new top, it's probably a heck of a deal. On the other hand it could be a cool looking, fun to drive car that's looking for a place to die. Ignore the anti-automatic zealots, it could have another 100,000 miles left in it or another 100--they don't know and neither do you. The thing is there's about a half a dozen different things on this car that could go wrong and would cost more to fix than you paid for the car. Once they go wrong you either have to fix it or sell the car at boat anchor/wrecking yard prices. If you think you're buying some cheap fun, you aren't. The purchase price is just the first installment. You could take your $2k and put it down on an $8-10K Saab Convertible (which will buy you a really nice, ultra low mileage C900 or a nice NG900/9-3). You'd have a small payment but it might be cheaper (and wiser) in the long run.
