Saabnutt and Saab86, thanks for the tips! Right now the car isn't really drivable, since we've pulled the seats out to get to the floorboards, but we can check everything you mentioned except for the "driving at high speed" part. It didn't occur to me to suck on the tube! Such an obvious thing to try...
Thanks too for the tip about mosquito netting. I was planning to rig some kind of filter for that air intake. The mosquito netting sounds perfect.
I appreciate the help. I'll report back in a few days.
