I've always thought that the c900 shifter was sloppy--like shifting with a wet noodle sometimes. A short-throw shifter takes the sloppyness out and makes finding the gates a lot simpler. It's a more solid feel.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, I see a lot of bent or broken shifter shafts. That comes from drivers trying to force the car into gear, plain and simple. The shaft bends because the fulcrum is so low on the shaft and the throw is so long. You can really get some momentum behind it. Having to force things could be caused by lots of factors from a worn clutch to misalignment to bad internals to operator error.
A short-throw shifter isn't going to solve a misalignment issue, it just makes confident speed-shifting effortless. There is no question where the gates are, and it doesn't take much movement to get there.
