as that could present terribly frustrating electrical issues. You should deal with repairing/replacing those sections or at least disabling them via the fuse panel if those decayed circuist aren't necessary for diagnosing the problem.
I would do a search on this board for instructions on how to rig up a jumper at your fuse box; your current method of jumpering down by the key seems a little dicey to me. The fuse panel jump is much more elegant and handy.
You say your pump is producing pressure. Do you have any idea how old it is? Some of your symptoms suggest a failing fuel pump.
Usually you can hear the pump switch on for just a moment when you turn the ignition on. Then you might hear the pump relay up next to the ECU on the right fenderwall click off as the relay shuts the pump off.
I'm kind of spitballing here but I'd focus on the fuel pump/relay areas first (after the wire insulation stuff is isolated or resolved).
