let me break it down to make a bit more clear (I do assume that it was a very serious saying that you were not expecting from me) - let's put it this way.
There happened a World War II more then 60 years ago. I gonna stay on my own and fight till the end proving that it were Soviets that won over Germans, although with a great (or maybe even the greatest) help from allied forces - I mean not only Normandy but mostly lend-lease. I'm 30 so I was born in SU, not RU - I am soviet.
Am I proud of Russkies that won WWII? No, I did nothing for that since I even did not exist then. But I'm happy that they (THEY, not WE - most of US did nothing since it happened 60 years ago) won. I admire that those people have done (although not the higher staff). But I'm not proud since I personally did nothing for that.
My grandy finished that war in Prague being in a rank of 1st sergeant. They all say that I must be proud for him. What the hell? Why? It was my grand farther who did it, not me. Once again: I'm really glad that he did it, I do admire. It's an honor for me to have the same name. But I can not be proud since it's he who did it, not me.
Mr. Putin won the Olympic Games '14 competition - it'll be Sochi city that will host those Olympic games. Can mr. P be proud for that? Yes, obviously he can (I'm taking out of context the fact that it's one of the SOUTHEST cities in RU that gonna host WINTER olympics). Can his speech-writer be proud for that? Yes, he can since he wrote that speech. Can mr. X be proud for that? Yes, he can IF he took part in that project - e.g. even if he had been tickling grand olympic jury members until they agree to choose Sochi - otherwise he can not.
To be proud of being xxx-ian is a non-sense. I mean to say it makes no sense. One can be glad to be xxx-ian or admire being xxx-ian or it even can be an honor for him to be a part of that nation or team or to carry that name after his dad or grandy. But he can be proud only for the things that he have worked on his own: personally or as a part of a team.
