Ok, I did replace the shifting rod but I found that I put in the new series linkage with the rubber sandwich dealy and it was too short. It turns out that the shifting rod for the newer series is longer and the linkage sandwich thing is shorter. But the older series has a shorter shifter rod and longer linkage. I tried a few things but I finally settled on putting back on the new series linkage and rod. I had to cut off the old series linkage to get the plastic sleeve off and drill a hole in the new series rod to attach the sleeve.
It all went back together nicely.
Thanks for you help guys.
