peter,
You pretty much proved that the ignition system (inc. the distributor) is working when you made the engine run with ether. The problem is that fuel is not getting injected into the cylinders. You need to be careful when swapping ECUs, your car is LH 2.4 and if you jam an LH 2.2 (earlier) ECU in there I wouldn't expect it to run. You can do pin testing on the entire injection system with a volt-ohm meter, Saab published a manual with directions on that (I have the 2.2 book, not the 2.4 book). You really should be swapping relays ($18 new) before swapping the ECU ($140 used). If you have to remove the bolster it's not that big of a job (try pulling the engine). Be real sure that all the black ground wires near the thermostat are secured to ground. If they are not secured the injectors will not work at all.
