you can bypass the chime should you remove it but to do so you need to remove the center console - removing the chime as noted defeats the door switch ans then install a few jumpers
the door and interior switch are all simple grounds - meaning voltage from the yellow wire should be present at the side interior light at all times
try to ground the door switch wire to determine which lights function and to determine if its the wire itself which can break, the contact switch or a problem elsewhere.
