your year may have the second version of the shift shaft coupler, you can go to eEuroparts to see the picture, it looks like a BOW TIE, the issue with it is usually that the rubber center tears and when you move your shifter to the right to catch the 3-4 slot rather than rotating with the shifter it opens up. you can view it from the top looking straight down, site on the AC pulley and look directly down. have a friend move the shifter side to side to help you find it. If the 2nd version it will be very rectangular in shape, the 1st version is very round in shape, they are interchange able. after you find the unit, have your helper move the shifter very very slowly starting at the 1-2 slot and going to the 5-R slot. you should see it move the entire time by the same amount. if the rubber is torn you will see the two parts NOT move together, the front most portion on the transmission will lag the rear most portion that is attached to the shifter, the rubber in the middle is not keeping them moving together. you can get under the car, use jack stands 2 minimum, and look closer, the unit is above teh steering rack, and see it move closely to confirm that the coupler is the issue and not internal to the transmission (it could be). a quick *temporary* fix is to use 3-4 strong zip ties to clamp the unit from the outside. one wrapped around each narrow end where the nuts are to keep the sides pressed together, you can also do a diagonal or "X" as well. best of luck.
