when an engine gets severely overheated, bad things happen. One bad thing is that the piston rings get trashed, and you lose vertually all compression. I have seen engines like that run relatively well, once the well warped head is replaced. That's because the head will warp badly (like, FUBAR!) as well. I would have a good look at the water pump and belt setup, because that may be where your noises are coming from (if lucky), but the compression needs to be checked before you start trying to patch this up. if you see numbers less than 100psi then you should start looking for a replacement motor.
