Buckmath,
Don't drive the car anymore until this is corrected. These cars with the T37 have shifter detent at both ends of the shift mechanism and they must be synchronized. The detent at the valve body end (inside the transmission) is the weaker of the two and easily over-ridden. That's the one you are now feeling when you shift. If it is positioned between two of it's "stops" while driving the transmission will be wrecked. You aren't feeling the detent at the shift lever because it is gummed up and not working. All kinds of junk and dirt falls through the "brush" at the bottom of the shift lever and eventually can prevent the spring and ball inside the bottom end of the lever shaft from catching on the steel comb, so no detent there. You need to free it up. Disassembly, cleaning and lubricating is the proper approach but short of that you may get it working again by just running solvent down there and hoping that clears out the mechanism. You could spray WD40 down there and see if that works. If that wirks then pray some light lubricant afterwards as well.
