in my case cable was kinked and rusted - it looks like a bicycle cable but its not -

there is an inner plastic sheath through which the wire cable runs- there are several weak points -

one is at the release latch which can get jammed up with dirt and gunk - this needs to slide freely, clean lube several times,

the handle in the cabin is strong but the cable connector is not - it tends to bend and/or kink here

finally the hold down mounts in the engine bay can break allowing the cable to flex too much

removal of cable is simple - remove three bolts holding handle behind carpet, then unhook the fastener at the handle and pull the cable through the firewall

try getting some good lubricant down the cable shaft holding it vertically while its out

instead of replacing my cable I removed the grill- tied a wire loop around the wire cable where it enters the latch at the front and replaced the grill

a gentle tug on the loop (hidden from view) pops the lid easily
