I also suggest staying away from flux-core wire. Better results can be had using copper coated hard wire shielded by a gas mixture of 75% argon / 25% CO2. CO2 can be used alone (cheaper than the mix), but tends to splatter alot. When tack-welding, point the wire at the leading edge of the previous tack and hit the trigger. This will produce a 50% fusion and prevent undercut which may demand another blast of wire to fill in.
