The round casing and the pieces inside fell into the tank. Mine gauge was jumping around too just before it read empty all the time. I just basically put the pieces back together. I had to solder a piece back on, and I also added a small sheet metal screw to hold the round casing into place and it ain't going anywhere :-) I don't remember exactly what it looked like inside the sending unit, so I can't provide exact details until I see one apart again, but it was fairly straight forward.
