Well, it didn't solve the mystery of the dash lights coming on, but it's nice to have reliable brake lights again!
I still have a situation where when you shut the car off, the dash illumination lights come on, draining the battery after a couple days. Jiggling the ignition switch to the right results in "clunk" from a relay operating, and the dash lights going out. It was postulated that there might be a relay sticking, but the lights aren't on when you first turn off the car, it takes a second or so and removing the key. Jiggling the key gets the relay to operate and the lights to go off, and you have to find the sweet spot where the lights stay off and you can still get the key out.
The problem is you can't tell if the lights are on until its really dark out.
Unless I find this solution and soon, I'm going to revert to putting in a battery isolater relay on the main ground, so all power can be cut to the car when parked. My stepdaughter normally has this car 400 miles away, and I can't have her stranded or unable to get to class.
